The Shire's rules
Mount Alexander Shire asks for dogs to be on a lead on the roads of Castlemaine, Campbells Creek and Chewton, and in the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens. Dogs aren't allowed within five metres of a playground, or on the playing surfaces of ovals such as Camp Reserve. The Shire's fenced dog park is at the Wesley Hill Recreation Reserve. We walk every dog on the lead, everywhere, so all of this is simple.
Where we walk
Castlemaine has some lovely walking: the older streets around the town centre, the paths along Forest Creek, and the edges of the goldfields bush around Chewton. We match the route to your dog, a gentle loop for an older dog or a longer one for a dog with energy to burn, and keep to well-used paths.
Weather and the bush
Castlemaine summers get hot, and winter mornings are often frosty. In the heat we walk early or late and keep it short and shady, or swap it for a drop-in visit. In the warmer months snakes come out in the bush and along the creeks, so we stay on open paths and keep dogs out of long grass.
