On the lead, by default

Greater Bendigo is an on-leash municipality by default. Dogs must be on a lead in public places unless they're in a designated off-leash area or one of the City's fenced dog parks, such as Allingham Reserve in Golden Square and Truscott Reserve in California Gully. Dogs aren't allowed on some playing surfaces or within play spaces at all. We keep your dog on the lead for the whole walk, so these rules are easy to keep.

Where we walk

Bendigo is good dog-walking country. There are wide footpaths in the older streets around Quarry Hill and Kennington, creek paths along Bendigo Creek, reserve tracks in Kangaroo Flat and Strathdale, and bush edges out towards Junortoun and Maiden Gully. We pick routes that suit your dog: quiet streets for a nervous dog, a longer loop for one with energy to spare.

Summer and the bush

Bendigo summers are hot and dry, so walks move to the cooler ends of the day, and on the hottest days we swap a walk for a drop-in visit. In the warmer months snakes are out and about in the bush and along creek lines. We stick to open, well-used paths, keep dogs out of long grass, and turn around if we see one.
